A letterman jacket is more than outerwear. It is a record of achievement, and the patches tell the story. Letterman jacket patches are one of the most searched varsity accessories in the United States, especially in the months before awards season.
Graduation Year Patches
A chenille year patch shows your graduating class. It is usually placed on the sleeve or the chest and is one of the first patches students add.
Chevrons
Chevrons usually show how many years you lettered in a sport or activity. They are normally placed under the main letter or on the sleeve, with one chevron for each year.
Sport and Activity Icons
Small chenille icons show what you took part in, such as a football, a track shoe, a cheer megaphone or a musical note for band. Cheer, music, drill and drama patches are especially popular because they recognise achievements beyond traditional sports.
Where Should Patches Go?
- Main letter: left chest
- Year patch: sleeve or right chest
- Chevrons and bars: under the letter or on the sleeve
- Activity icons: around or on the main letter
- Name: across the back or on the chest
Every school has its own traditions, so check with your coach or school if you are unsure.
Iron-On or Sew-On?
Iron-on patches are quick and convenient. Sew-on patches are the most secure and are the better choice for wool jackets that will be worn for years. Many people iron a patch on to position it and then add a few stitches around the edge for extra strength.
